Making the most of the polytunnels

Polytunnel number one:

We are now harvesting salad leaves; Claytonia, Red Mustard, Green in Snow (salad mustard), lettuce and mitzuna.

This week we also sowed carrots between the rows that will continue to grow after we have removed the salad leaves after their second or third cut.

Rows of mitzuna regrowing after first cut.

"Red Mustard" adds a spicy tange to the mixed salad.

Lettuce, is mixed with baby chard and claytonia for a mild mixed salad.

Polytunnel number two:

The salads in polytunnel number two had been cut three times and were either running to seed or starting to be over-run with chickweed.

This tunnel has now been cleared and we made the decision to change the bed layout from three central beds to four. This will mean more rows of salad can be planted and the beds are now narrower for easier harvesting.

The beds have been prepared and watered, we will wait afew days for a "weed flush" to appear before hoeing the beds again ready for planting with more cut and come again salads. Because we do not use chemicals to control weeds the preparation of what is called a "stale seed bed" is important for allowing the new salad seedlings to get a head start on the weeds as it will be two weeks before they are big enough to allow the rows to be weeded again.
