"Mind The Gap"

Planting seeds in propogation tunnel.

Last year we erected an 8m by 5.5m polytunnel that was used for the propagation of seedlings.

Over the last month we have been planting seeds in module trays to be planted out later into the polytunnels or under the protection of a cloche or fleeze, hopefully many of the crops will be ready in May and early June in an attempt to fill the "Hungry Gap" (the time of year when the stored winter produce is running out, but before summer crops are ready to harvest). The First tunnel is now full and we haven't even begun to plant the main summer crops.

Over the last week we have planted into module trays:
Onion seeds (multiple sown 3 seeds per module) x 1200 modules;
Khol Rhabi, Logo, (for planting in the polytunnels or under fleeze,one seed per module x 600;
Broad beans, Sutton, for planting out at end February x 1200;
Cabbage, Pixe (spring variety for spring / early summer cutting) x480;
Beetroot, Bolthardy, multiple sown 3 seeds per module x 720;
Red Russian Kale, For cutting small leaves in late spring early summer, x 720;
Turnip, Milan Purple top, multiple sown x 720;
Pea, mange tout, x 960;
Mizuna, for salad mix, 4 x 80;
Red mustard, for salad mix, 4 x 80;
Green in snow, for salad mix, 4x 80;
Rocket, for salad mix, 4x 80;
Ruby chard, for salad mix, 4x 80;
Mixed lettuce, for salad mix, 4x 80;
Lettuce, Little Gem, for salad mix, 4x 80;
Dwarf French Beans (for polytunnel or under cloches)3 seeds per module x 260.

Our first prorogation tunnel full, this week we began to erect a second tunnel, hopefully to be finished next week so we can begin to plant summer cabbage, beetroot, radish and more salad and broad beans and by the end of February, tomatoes, peppers and courgettes for planting in the polytunnels.
