Preparing for pole raising
Today we were preparing the 12 holes for the pole barn, cutting them to the right size and putting in a 150mm deep 600mmm by 6000mm footing to hold the weight of the pole. Also began work on scorching the base of the poles in an effort to preserve them when they are burried in the ground.
First the bark is stripped off the poles
The area of the poles in contact with the soil are scorched with a roofing touch in an attempt to protect the wood from decay, the scorching will also allow better penetration of preservative
Holes are drilled in the base of the poles and then injected with wood preserver
The surface of the pole is also painted with wood preserver
Pole raising will be happening this week end on the 11th and 12th volunteers still welcome. Please ring in advance.
